What should I expect during my Health Check appointment?

During your appointment, one of our highly skilled nurses or pharmacists will go through a brief medical assessment with you. These questions will help our doctors to get a better picture of your overall health, which will be taken into account when providing your test results. This will include height and weight measurements, information on any medications you are currently taking, as well as a blood pressure check.

After you have completed the assessment, the nurse or pharmacist will take a small blood sample (around 10ml to 20ml) which will be sent to the lab to be tested. All of our nurses and pharmacists are highly skilled and will be able to take your sample with minimal pain or discomfort.

How will I receive my test results?

When going through your assessment with the nurse or pharmacist, you will also be set up with a Superdrug Online Doctor account if you don’t already have one. Through your Superdrug Online Doctor account, you will have access to our secure messaging system with our team of doctors. When our doctors have analysed your sample, they will send you a message to your Superdrug Online Doctor account with your results. When your results are messaged to you, you’ll receive an email notification to alert you that there is a message in your account.

As the results of your test may contain sensitive medical information, we’ll only send test results through your Superdrug Online Doctor account, rather than through unsecured channels such as a text message or email. During the appointment, the nurse or pharmacist will show you how to access your Superdrug Online Doctor account, and where to find your results.

What is being tested?

HbA1c – this test will check your blood glucose control, so our doctors can assess whether you are at risk of diabetes. High levels of blood glucose means you have too much sugar in your blood, which increases your risk of developing diabetes and it’s complications.

Lipid profile – a lipid profile helps our doctors to assess your cardiovascular health by checking your cholesterol. Cholesterol is a fatty substance that is made by the liver, which is important to help the body function and is found in every cell in the human body. Cholesterol is transported around the bloodstream, so having excessive amounts of cholesterol can cause it to build up, which can in turn lead to a number of health problems – especially cardiovascular-related conditions.

Kidney function – this test checks your levels of the compounds urea and creatinine, and if you have a healthy glomerular filtration rate. Running these tests on different aspects of your kidney health allows our doctors to get an overview of how well your kidneys are working, and assess if there are any problems.

Vitamin B12 levels – vitamin B12 is needed to create healthy red blood cells, and also keeps the brain and nervous system functioning properly. Low levels of vitamin B12 can cause you to produce fewer red blood cells than a healthy person would, and can also cause your red blood cells to be less effective at transporting oxygen around the body. This can result in symptoms such as tiredness and lack of energy, and can also have an impact on mental abilities such as your memory.

Vitamin D levels – vitamin D regulates the amount of calcium, magnesium, and phosphate that your body absorbs. These nutrients are important as they help to keep your bones, muscles and teeth healthy and strong. Low levels of vitamin D are associated with a number of health conditions, such as weakened bones (osteoporosis), heart disease, and certain types of cancers.

Iron (ferritin) levels – ferritin is a protein that stores and releases iron, making sure that your body has the right amount of iron to function properly. Iron is needed to make sure your red blood cells are healthy, and also helps to support your immune system. Low levels of ferritin can lead to iron deficiency, which can cause tiredness, lack of energy, and shortness of breath.

QRISK 3 Score – This uses your medical history together with your blood test results, to estimate your risk of having a heart attack or stroke over the next 10 years
