Varicalle Zoster IgG Blood Test (Chickenpox)

This is a blood testing service to measure your immunity to Varicella Zoster virus (VZV), which causes Chickenpox and Shingles. One of our trained nurses will take a small blood sample, via a venous draw. VZV can cause health problems during pregnancy as well as in patient who are immunocompromised. It is also important to be vaccinated against VZV or have natural immunity due to past infection in certain occupations, such as health care workers.

We will then send your sample to a UKAS registered laboratory where it will be tested, and your results will be analysed by a doctor from Melio Health. Your results will be provided via the Melio Health platform. To find out more about Melio Health click here

You will need to consent to the nurse setting up a Melio Health account for you and your personal data being entered on the Melio patient portal; their terms and conditions can be found Melio Health Terms of Use.

Frequently Asked Question

Do I need to bring photographic ID to the nurse appointment?

You will need to bring a photo ID to your appointment. If you do not present ID during your appointment you can continue to have the test, but we will not be able to verify your test should antibody status verification be required. If you arrive at your appointment without acceptable ID and wish to be able to verify your test, we can reschedule your appointment but there will be a charge of £30.

Accepted ID includes current passport, current UK or EEA photocard driving licence, EEA member state identity card or a national identity card bearing a photograph. Please note that only originals can be accepted for verification

How is the blood sample sent to the lab?

Your sample will be transported to the lab via a courier network supplied by Melio Health or via Royal Mail post.

Please be aware that our partner lab may not be able to generate a result from every test due to a variety of factors, this may include haemolysis of the sample. In these circumstances we would do our best to offer a replacement test and nurse appointment that suits you.

How long will it take to receive my results?

You should receive an SMS when your result is ready, which is usually within 15 working days after the blood draw. You can then log in to your Melio account to review your result and the interpretation of your result by a registered GMC doctor.
