A “positive” or “reactive” hepatitis B immunity blood test (anti-HBs) result indicates that a person is protected against the hepatitis B virus. The test is normally carried out after receiving a course of hepatitis B vaccines. At Superdrug we also offer the vaccine service.
What does the service involve?
A blood sample will be taken by one of our trained Nurses via a venous blood draw. This means that we will collect a small sample of blood from one of your veins. During the consultation,the nurse will check your photo ID to verify the blood sample.
The sample is sent to a certified medical lab to be tested. Your results will be analysed by Doctors at Melio health, who will provide you your results via the Melio Health platform. To find out more about Melio Health click here
Do I need to bring a photograph ID to the nurse appointment?
You will need to bring a photo ID to your appointment. If you do not present ID during your appointment you can continue to have the test, but we will not be able to verify your test should antibody status verification be required. If you arrive at your appointment without acceptable ID and wish to be able to verify your test, we can reschedule your appointment but there will be a charge of £25.
Accepted ID includes current passport, current UK or EEA photocard driving licence, EEA member state identity card or a national identity card bearing a photograph. Please note that only originals can be accepted for verification
When should I book an appointment?
The anti-HBs test should be performed between 1 to 4 months (preferably 3 months) after the completion of a course (3 shots) of the Hepatitis B vaccine..
How accurate are the results?
It is a quantitative assay that measures anti-HBs levels between 3.1–1000.0 mIU/mL with high sensitivity and specificity. The clinical sensitivity for vaccinated or naturally infected individuals is 99.5% (95% confidence interval 97.45%–99.99%) and clinical specificity is 99.8 (95% confidence interval 98.92%–100%).
How is the blood sample sent to the lab?
Your sample will be transported to the lab via a courier network supplied by Melio health or via royal mail post. Details provided on online booking portal
Please be aware that our partner lab may not be able to generate a result from every test due to a variety of factors, this may include haemolysis of the sample. In these circumstances we would do our best to offer a replacement test and nurse appointment that suits you.
How long will it take to receive my results?
You should receive an SMS when your result is ready, which is usually in 3-5 working days after the blood draw. You can then log in to your Melio account to review your result and the interpretation of your result by a registered GMC doctor.
What does a positive result mean?:
A positive result means that antibodies against the hepatitis B surface antigen have developed in your blood, either due to vaccination or a previous infection. If anti-HBs titers are above 100 mIU/ml, you are considered immune against hepatitis B and you don’t have to do anything. But if titers are between 10-100 mIU/ml, you will need a booster shot of the hepatitis B vaccine.
What does a negative result mean?
A negative result means that you have not developed any antibodies against the hepatitis B surface antigen. If you have taken a hepatitis B vaccine, a negative test means that you did not respond to the vaccine and need a new course of vaccination.
